a photographic story about creating of affordable housing for youth.
this story needs to be told...
As a documentary photographer, I chose a different crisis in my new
series than the health crisis that currently has the world in its grip: the housing market, close by and in my own environment. The measures as a result of the pandemic limited my travel
distance, but broadened my view by researching and photographing locally.
My photo project is about creating housing for young people in North
Limburg. The hope for affordable housing is now pinned on vacant offices and buildings. The housing project 'Stationskwartier' in Hegelsom is an example of this, a project of the citizen
initiative "Futurum Hegelsom". The municipality and residents are taking matters into their own hands for a vaccine against slum landlords, high rents and a shortage of social
housing.
The former bank building at Horst-Sevenum station was converted into 49
affordable rental apartments for young people in one year. I took my first photo in November 2020. The series Perspectief shows the reconstruction from bank building to the bank at home; from
demolition, renovation to the final move of the new residents to their new place. A new perspective, from living at home to their new home, building their own future.
